The Original "Shanook "

CatNip Pillow
Shanook loved to roll around on the floor with a catnip pillow.  Then fall asleep with it afterwards.

Snoozing in the Dirt                                     Shanook with Maureen
Shanook was a big Mommas Boy!

The story of Shanook:  When I was younger and living with my sister in an apartment in Newmarket NH, I awoke one morning as my sister dropped a little kitten onto my bed.  She had found it roaming the halls of the apartment complex, scared and alone.  I asked around the complex and other nearby neighbors and no one knew where he came from, so the task fell to me to raise this beautiful and loving kitten.  He became my little Shanook.
Shanook  was the friendliest cat I have ever seen and the reason I fell in love with Maine Coon Cats. He went everywhere with me. He sat on my lap while I drove, ran behind my horse when I went for trail rides, and he slept on my chest and drooled on my face while I slept.  He never left my side. If ever there is an animal "love of your life", Shanook was mine.  He was always faithful to me, almost like a good dog. He always came running when I called him.
Sadly, Shanook passed away suddenly, a couple weeks after our son was born.  Not a day goes by that he isn't in my thoughts or I feel his presence somehow near me. I often catch a glimpse of something moving in the corner of my eye or feel a cat jump onto the bed at night, even when I know the door is closed and there are no cats in the room.  Our dedication to him was to begin breeding Maine Coons in an effort to promote the best breed of cat there is.  While our goals to strive for the healthy, sturdy and strong Maine Coons are important to us, it is Shanooks loving and friendly temperment that most drives us to to breed for. So not only does our cattery reflect him in name but in the type of cats we try to raise. I will always love you Shanook!

(Please note that while these photos of Shanook were taken outdoors, he was always with Maureen and we do not allow any of our cats outside now and do not reccomend it.)
