Grandchildren

They lighten the darkest room;
So mischievous, yet so innocent
Lavishing love on you
Wrapping you around their finger
With their hugs and smiles,
Bypassing mommy and daddy
To ask Grandma or Grandpa
For favors or treats;
Knowing you will give in
(At least sometimes!).

Oh the thrill of a grandparent
To hear "I love you, Grandma"
Or, "I love you, Grandpa"
It would melt even the coldest heart.
What a joy they bring to our lives
Filling any void that might exist,
Giving opportunity and excuse
To shop when otherwise not necessary;
Playing their favorite games
When baby-sitting
How they tire you out!

One would not exchange the value
A grandchild brings
Or the happiness and fulfillment
That comes from having them tag along
Or even cry for you when you leave;
And you try to contain how you feel,
Secretly.
Never take them for granted, but always
Thank God for his wonderful blessing
of grandchildren!
