When the airplane took off from Logan Airport at 2:25PM an April 22, 1999; Larry Frates and Elaine Morrison of Laconia began an adventure to the State of Ceara in Brazil. They were invited to visit the cities of Caucaia and Fortaleza as part of the ENVELART PROJECT. The goal of the ENVELART PROJECT is to foster communication between the children of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and the Rubens Vaz Da Costa School in Ceara. Artwork of home, school, community, and customs drawn on envelopes has already been exchanged between the two communities. And an Internet Website has been created.

Travel Journal

Hello Everyone!

Our 26 hour traveling event began with a simple bus trip from Concord, NH and ended up with Elaine and I being welcomed by the most enthusiastic members of Envelart and Partners of the Americas from Fortaleza and Caucaia. We were driven away in our Official vehicle provided by the Prefeitura DA Educação of Caucaia and taken to our new home for the next two weeks, the Hotel Mar Azul. As we traveled down the cobbled stone streets lined with colorful buildings, crowds of people and the sounds of music that can only be found in Brazil, our driver pointed out every possible spot we should visit while dodging the traffic that seemed to move as and endless line. Our rooms are small but the kindness shown to us by our new Brazilian friends is bigger than the hotels lining the shoreline. Following a short nap we were then taken to visit the IBEU, which serves as a Cultural Arts Center in Fortaleza. Quick tours of the theater that will feature the Get It Together Magic Show kept us busy and made sleeping that night an easy task. Since that time we have visited more beaches, outdoor art centers, plantations, beautiful homes and spent time with the warmest and friendliest people you could imagine. Over the next few days we will be sending photos of the adventures of Larry and Elaine and we hope you will enjoy this sampling of a place you should visit some time in your life. Until our next longer message enjoy the images. Larry and Elaine

A vast plantation of Caucaia makes a great spot to hike, paint and eat. It was here that our Brazilian hosts presented us with a feast of seven courses. As you can guess we didn't go hungry.

CLUE: This type of plantation would be enjoyed by monkeys.
The shoreline of Fortaleza is and endless line of beaches. Beira Mar is an example of the way people cool off during the days of temperatures in the high 80's. It has rained in the evening and the sun is out during the days

CLUE: The temperature was 36C.
The colorful buildings that can be found along the beaches create a colorful pallette of colors and designs. This disco BOITE Zazueira is just one of the examples we have seen during the past few days.

CLUE: They call them arranha-ceus.
The Dragao is the largest Cultural Arts center in the area of Fortaleaza. The colorful exhibitions, concerts and puppet shows are daily events that seem to start early in the morning and go late into the evening, Families seem to be the center of all the activities at this premier center for the Arts.

CLUE: One of these might be fire breathing.
Mrs. Guera, our host for a memorable day at a plantation brought us in touch with the exotic wildlife and vegetation of Caucaia. In addition to this colorful parrot named NAO we met geese, goats, vultures and peacocks. Orchids, cashew trees, coconut palms, banana plants, cactus, herb gardens, lizards and centipedes.

CLUE: You can drink the juice from this type of tree seed with a straw.
Hope this helps you to understand some of what we have seen so far......

More later Larry and Elaine 4/26/99
