The Adventures of Decker the Gnome

The Living Storm

Verse 11

Returning to Dulgos's house we found ourselves in a large open room, nearly the length of the house.  Dark stained wooden panels lined the walls, with a few tapestries hung in various places. A warm fire was already glowing at the far end, and Dulgos was already there, drinking a steaming brew.  Narrow wooden columns support the roof, branching off above into elaborately carved and detailed beams, depicting various images of a relaxed elven life. Between each pair of pillars sit deep carved wooden chairs, concave and piled high with pillows, perfect for sleeping in.

Unfortunately for those taller than that of elven height, the chairs were a little too small, as Binkley discovered and took to the comforts of the floor, and began his usual fits of tossing and snoring, thankfully he can't attract any goblins or worse around here, or else we might actually be in trouble. For the first time in a while though we were welcome to sleep as long as we liked.   Ne'Stahsia and Aalaysia headed off to find the place where they could get there hair dyed blue, while Cerrannor did his own thing wandering the streets, as me and Binkley cannibalized some sleep for ourselves.

I soon got up myself and thinking I'd go and get some breakfast instead of cooking it myself, I went looking for a little restaurant to eat at, it took me a long time to figure out that these elves must not like to eat out, for my stomach was telling me that it wanted something and it wanted something  right then and there.  So angry I didn't find some place to eat, I returned to Dulgos's where I made up a dish of Potatos ala flammbie (or at least I think that is what they are called in the common tounge) using a special mixture of ingredients that ignites easily, as Binkley watched me cook it. Afterwards Dulgos returned wrinkling his nose and didn't seem to enjoy the scent of cooked potatos, and declined to comment on why he didn't want any, which just annoyed me futher for the day's events. But Binkley seemed interested in the recipe so I shared it with him, so it would only take him a few months instead of a few years to get it right.  Unfortunately I learned that Binkley couldn't read and write, so I wondered how much of my recipe he will be able to preserve with his symbology for writing.

It was after I finished sharing that recipe that a loud rapping sound came from the door, then a young elf dashed in before Dulgos could even get fully to his feet, gibbering loudly something as me and Binkley stared on at the whole scene.  Whatever it was Dulgos was in a hurry to leave as he almost forgot to motion us to follow.  We followed him down to the waterfront where 2 ships quite a distance out, stood at a standstill as smoke bellowed forth from both ships into the sky mixing in with a single cloud above alone in the blue sky.  Dulgos told us that it was pirates preying on merchant ships sailing a shipping route from Northhaven, and as he was getting more details a resounding crash followed by a blinding flash blasted forth from the water. Looking out towards the ships, both ships rested lower in the water, the trimeme of the merchants on its side sinking into the water and the pirate ship cleaved in half, sinking into the depths below.

The cloud that hovered over the ships then began to move with great speed towards the horizon, towards a tiny isle in the distance, where it stayed.  He then grabbed some elves and rushed towards some boats, where I joined one of the boats going out, despite the looks that I got as I did, as Binkley jumped in behind me. We soon arrived at the wreckage, discovering a body in the drifts, floating face down it's back torn and blackened with burns it's head torn off.  Our boat circled about coming across more bodies and limbs and debris.  There was then a shout from another of the boats with the only survivor of the wreck.  Towards the horizon the dark cloud remained, flashes of light lumminating the water around the isle it went to. We returned to Evest, the entrance we came from hidden within the high cliff faces lumminating sheens of green onto the ocean.

At the beach again I approached Dulgos who was hurriedly talking with a group of older elves while I waited to ask what was on the mysterious island in the distance, that the cloud went to. When he finished, but before I could ask him about the isle he told me that he was taking Cahir in search of the lost Earthstone, but that they would be mounted by flying steed and that we couldn't go with them. This seemed to be triggered all of the sudden by the attack on the ships, he told me to tell everyone to await their return here in Evest, and as he rushed off the survivor was rushed by mummbling something about the storm being alive. We returned to tell Ne'Stahsia and Aalaysia about what Dulgos had told me, as they rushed the survivor away.
