Thanks to RLW for contributing these photos.
He notes that in 1936 the original granite dam has been replaced by a wooden
dam at the same site where the concrete state dam is now located but was not as high
so the lake level was much lower as you can see in these photos. Apparently you
had to walk quite a ways out from the shore before you could take a dip.
