Second Annual Rosenberg
Railroad Festival & Hobo Days – A Living
History Festival Celebrating Railroading In Fort Bend County
Contact: Jana Smith
281-633-2846
WHEN: Saturday, April 24, 2010, 10:00-6:00
WHERE: Rosenberg Railroad Museum, 1921 Avenue F, Rosenberg,
TX 77471
COST: $8 for Adults, $4 for Children- 2-14
The festival will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 10:00-6:00 on the grounds of the museum, located at 1921 Avenue F in Rosenberg, Texas’ Historic Downtown District. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for kids from 2-14.
Highlights of the day include re-enactors in a Depression Era Hobo Jungle (camp) and modern Hobo Jungle. Visitors are invited to visit the camps, talk to the “Hobos” and find out what life was like then and now. Costumed interpreters will include a “conductor” in the 1972 caboose, an operator in the 1903 Tower 17 (switching station), and a ”railroad baron” in the 1879 business car. A tour of all Museum exhibits is included.
A CCC camp (Civilian Conservation Corp) exhibit will be open and the Boy Scouts will be selling seedling trees for $10 a gallon can. At the end of the day, guests are invited to the Salvation Army Tent for a bowl of Mulligan Stew. The cost for the stew is $5 or you can bring 5 non-perishable food items to be donated to Helping Hands.
Special exhibits will include an exhibit on the Railroad Special Police. Speeder Clubs will have their speeders on display including the museum’s own speeders, one newly restored and our turn-of-the century one-man velocipede. The Brazos Bend State Park will have a display of reptiles and spiders and the Texas Parks and Wildlife system will have a special exhibit on the CCC and the architecture of the state parks from the Depression era.
For children we have model trains; games; crafts; trackless train rides and a special train ride for toddlers; train moon walks for the big kids and one especially for toddlers; a face-painter, clown and balloon twister, story-time in the children’s library and a hands-on play area full of train toys including a Thomas the Train Engine they can build themselves.
The Festival Hobo King and Queen and Prince and Princess will be
named at 2:00 so come in costume!
“We are very excited about this year’s festival. It was a
lot of fun last year and we have added many events and exhibits this year,”
said museum director Jana Smith. “We are exploring all aspects of
railroading in Fort Bend County and invite the public to explore with us.”
Historic Downtown Merchants will be participating with special surprises in each business. Come join us as the entire city turns out to celebrate the railroads in Fort Bend County.
The Rosenberg Railroad Museum is a private non-profit 501(c)3 educational institution. Proceeds from the festival will go to support the museum.
