Message from Superintendent John W. True Jr.

WELCOME to the Pemi-Baker School To Work Extreme Machine Contest

The Pemi-Baker Partnership--our local School To Work collaborative--is dedicated to advancing a community system for lifelong learning and regional economic development.

School To Work provides a means for the Pemi-Baker community--parents, teachers and school administrators, school boards, businesses, civic and social organizations, the arts community, legislators and, of course, students themselves--to participate in a dynamic process for strengthening education. School To Work prepares all students (K-16) with the 'know-how' necessary to compete and thrive in a global economy.

The Pemi-Baker School To Work Partnership is committed to mobilizing and supporting a range of opportunities for all students to learn and interact with our communities by building 'partnerships' that connect learning with real world experience.

Our goal is to help all students focus on their specific areas of interest and to make their educational experience a part of that process. To do this, we will challenge our schools to be a more central part of our communities and challenge our employers to make the success of our schools their business.

This evening's event, is designed to show our entire community that creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork abound in our schools. The 1998 "Open the Box" Open is proof positive that students of all ages have mastered proficiencies and can apply what they know appropriately and imaginatively to complete a complex task.

Ultimately, the Pemi Baker School To Work Partnership's success depends on the ability of our schools and businesses to form an alliance capable of promoting and supporting education and economic reform within our region. We hope that you enjoy this evening's School To Work event and invite everyone interested in helping to join our partnership.

John W. True, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools, SAU #48

About the Contest

THE CHALLENGE

The Extreme Machine Contest involves 13 student teams from all eight SAU #48 schools working to create a "Rube Goldberg" machine (i.e., a contraption that uses multiple steps to do a simple task.)

The 1998 challenge, named the 'Open the Box' Open requires student teams to create a machine that uses at least 10 individual steps to: open a box or close a box, or put something into a box, or take something out of a box. Specific generic guidelines must be followed by all teams, but each team has a wide range of latitude to create their own unique machine.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD MACHINE FOR THIS CONTEST?
The machine works. Once it is started, it runs all the way through to completion with no human intervention and ultimately completes the required task.

It has a unifying theme.

No team is penalized for having battery powered steps, but mechanical steps are more in the spirit of Rube Goldberg machines and will impress the judges more.

The final product has 10 clearly visible steps.

RUBE GOLDBERG

Reuben Lucius Goldberg was a cartoonist, who for 55 years satirized machines and gadgets. His cartoons combined simple machines and common household items to create complex, wacky and diabolically logical machines that accomplished simple or trivial tasks.
