Samuel Cherry of the Village of Canasaraga in the county of Madison and the state of New York being duly sworn deposeth and saith that early in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy five he this deponent entered into the American Service in the War of the Revolution in the company of Captain George Reed in Colonel Starks Regiment at a place called Mystic about four miles from Boston, in the same company and Regiment this deponent fought as a Sergeant at the Battle of "Bunker Hill" in September following this deponent as an Orderly Sergeant entered Captain Henry Dearborns Company in Colonel Arnolds Regiment and went to Quebec, and was there at the battle in which General Montgomery fell. On the eight of November 1776 this deponent was appointed & commissioned a Lieutenant in the Company of Captain James Carr in the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment, commanded by Colonel George Reed in the New Hampshire Line, in which capacity this deponent served until the 22nd of December 1777 when he was appointed and commissioned as Captain Lieutenant in the said 2nd New Hampshire Regiment but that the said commission was not actually made out until the 16th of June 1779, by which commission it appears that this deponent took rank as Captain Lieutenant from the said 22nd of December 1777. The said Commission last mentioned is now in this deponents possesion signed by John Jay as President of Congress. And this deponent further saith that as a Captain Lieutenant he served in the said Regiment in the said New Hampshire Line under the said Colonel Reid until the year 1779, and this deponent thinks till September in that year when he was appointed a Captain in the aforesaid Regiment and Line in which Capacity this deponent served until the close of the War. The commission which this deponent received as Captain is lost or destroyed and is now out of his knowledge. This deponent was at the Battle of Monmouth & fought as Lieutenant was in the Action of September 19th and October 7th 1777 at Saratoga and witnessed the surrender of General Burgoyne. This deponent was also in General Sullivans Expedition against the Indians in the Western part of the State of New York and was at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis.
